Skin Cancer & Your Feet

Most of us know that we should be applying sunscreen to help lower risk of skin cancer. We liberally apply and reapply to our faces and bodies, but I notice that many of us (myself included) sometimes forget about our feet! However, ensuring that your feet are adequately protected from sun exposure as well. In fact, The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) warns that the feet are not only susceptible to basal cell and squamous cell skin cancer, but are especially prone to melanoma, the most potentially deadly of skin malignancies.

The truth is, most of us don’t regularly examine our feet. This makes it easy for an unusual mole or freckle to sneak past us, undetected. It’s important not only to ensure prevention of skin cancer with regular sunscreen application, but also to regularly check your feet for any possible signs of skin cancer.

Be sure to check between toes and on the soles of your feet, as skin cancer can happen anywhere, and can even have the appearance of a simple mole or freckle. Regular checkups with your podiatrist can also help to ensure you aren’t at risk for cancer in hard to check places like under toenails or in between toes. If you have Diabetes, it is especially important to check for possible skin cancer as part of your regular foot check ups.
